Honeycomb Shelf: Structure and Function
The honeycomb shelf is a specialized storage system characterized by its closely spaced, honeycomb-shaped storage compartments. These compartments are typically made of bent steel and are designed exclusively for storing long size material such as pipes, rods, and profiles up to approximately six meters in length. This storage system is particularly advantageous for storing long size materials in small quantities per item. Storing takes place from the front, with the long goods usually secured in special cassettes, which are then slid into the compartments from the front—this gives the system its characteristic honeycomb appearance. In larger, partially or fully automated facilities, material transport vehicle handle the storage and retrieval of these cassettes. These devices transport the cassettes to a fixed operating or picking station, although their handling capacity may be limited by the travel paths of the material transport vehicle. Despite being highly automatable, storage in many facilities is still performed manually using forklifts. The system is particularly suitable for space-saving storage of slow-moving items and is frequently used in workshops, production halls, and similar environments where long goods must be available quickly and clearly.
