The Midpoint Heuristic for Efficient Route Planning – Function

The midpoint heuristic (German Mittelpunkt-Heuristik, also known as midpoint policy) describes a routing approach in order picking in which the aisle is functionally divided in half. The picker first collects only the items stored in the first half of the aisle. After processing all aisles where pick locations occurred in the front half, the picker moves to the rear face of the warehouse to apply the same principle to the storage locations in the second half of the aisle.
