It serves as a link between higher-level systems such as a Warehouse Management System (WMS) or a ERP System and physical material handling and warehousing technology. While a WMS is primarily responsible for planning and managing warehouse processes – that is, at a higher level – the WCS handles the real-time operational control of equipment. The Warehouse Control System controls and monitors equipment such as Conveyor Belts, Sorter, Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems, Shuttles or Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs). It monitors material flows, dispatches transport orders, optimizes equipment utilization, and ensures a smooth flow of goods. Through direct communication with automation systems, a WCS enables efficient and transparent control of logistics processes at the shop floor level.
