Function and benefits of sorting systems

Sorters are used in logistics for the automatic sorting of shipments and goods. They consist of a combination of conveyor belts and ejection mechanisms that transport the goods from an entry point to the respective destination point. On the way there, the goods are detected by sensors and cameras and the correct destination is determined using the barcode, RFID tag or other factors. Sorting systems are usually modular in design and the components used depend heavily on the characteristics of the load units to be transported. For example, roller, overhead or belt conveyors are used depending on the goods to be conveyed. Further processes, such as depalletizing and palletizing goods, can take place within the system. Short-term intermediate storage systems can also be built around the sorting system to ensure efficient use of space and a smooth process flow. The conveyor technology is also equipped with an ejection mechanism, which ejects the goods at the right place onto the correct end point or the next conveyor. Depending on the article characteristics, tilting trays, pushers, cross belts or sliding shoe mechanisms are used, for example.
