5 in 5 with Jan from MotionMiners

Podcast
In the new episode of Logistics Solutions: 5 Questions in 5 Minutes, Paula talks to Jan Wortkötter from MotionMiners. They discuss the role of technology and sensors in analyzing manual processes and creating concrete recommendations from data alone.
Jan Wortkötter explains how MotionMiners uses sensors and data to make intralogistics more transparent. Jan Wortkötter explains how MotionMiners uses sensors and data to make intralogistics more transparent.

1. Briefly describe your company and product.

Founded as a start-up in 2017, MotionMiners has since evolved into a well-established company with over 60 employees. Today, our team operates across the German industrial landscape and on an international scale.
At the heart of our business is our proprietary Motion-Mining® technology, which automates the anonymous, GDPR-compliant collection and analysis of manual work processes involving employees or vehicles. We use the resulting motion data to derive actionable insights that allow companies to identify and target optimization potential in their workflows.

2. What Problem do you solve?

Most companies already collect various types of process data, such as data from scanner systems and fleet tracking. However, the "black box" element between these known data points is often missing. What happens between two scans? What paths are taken? How often do clarification cases or special tasks arise?
MotionMiners steps in here. Our technology provides transparency into real, untracked processes, shedding light on time-wasting activities, inefficient movement patterns, and unnecessary strain. These hidden inefficiencies become visible — and, more importantly, solvable!

3. What are your USPs?

Motion-Mining® stands out thanks to its unique features:
Automated data collection: Unlike traditional time-motion studies involving clipboards and stopwatches, our solution enables the parallel observation of multiple employees over several days, ensuring a rich, high-quality dataset.
Anonymity and data protection: The analysis is fully anonymous. No personal data is recorded, ensuring full compliance with all data privacy regulations and enabling employees to work naturally without the pressure of being observed.
Objective decision-making foundation: With hundreds of hours of motion data, organisations can make well-informed decisions about process improvement.

4. Provide a concrete use case or success story that illustrates how your solution works in practice.

Motion-Mining® is used in two formats:
The first is MotionMiners CONSULTING, a project-based service delivered by our in-house experts. The second is MotionMiners INSIGHTS, a self-service tool that enables companies to conduct their own analysis and implement continuous process improvements.

One notable example comes from the logistics service provider BLG Logistics. By deploying MotionMiners Insights at their automotive terminal in Hamburg, BLG Logistics was able to identify opportunities to eliminate an entire warehouse hall, resulting in substantial savings. Reducing floor space improved operational efficiency and significantly cut energy, facility, and infrastructure costs. This success was featured in the trade magazine Logistik Heute, which underscores the long-term impact of data-driven process optimization.

5. What future developments or trends do you see in the logistics industry and how are you preparing as a company?

One major trend shaping the logistics sector is the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI), an area in which MotionMiners is actively evolving. While our machine learning algorithms already enhance our analytics, our vision extends further.
In the future, AI will interpret data and suggest specific process improvements that are fully automated and tailored to each situation. This shift highlights the growing integration of Motion-Mining® analysis and solution mapping via our digital platform, MotionMiners SOLUTIONS.
Our long-term goal is to deliver an end-to-end solution where analysis, recommendations, and vendor selection are seamlessly connected, enabling faster, data-driven process improvements with tangible business outcomes.
