Definition of overhead conveyor technology
An overhead conveyor system or (on a smaller scale) an overhead conveyor is used to transport unit loads. A support profile is either suspended from the ceiling or if the ceiling is too high, attached to an additional support structure. Carriages or trolleys are moved on this support profile. In simple systems, the trolleys are driven manually (by pushing) or by a drag chain drive. The drag chain runs around a guide profile. A tensioning and drive station tensions the chain and generates propulsion in the desired direction of travel. Carriers are mounted at regular intervals on the drag chain to grip and pull the trolley. The trolleys are loaded with the appropriate unit loads.
